CANTERBURY CUP - 16 June 2007

Report by Sarah

Yet another successful competition for the Bath Girls in 2007!

Bath Rhythmic Gymnastics Club took a five strong team down to Canterbury for the annual competition. As always the competition was fierce as some of the strongest clubs in the country took part to challenge each other for the medals!

Clubs from London, South East, Essex, Wales, Swindon, Finland and of course Bath all took part with a huge entry of over 70 gymnasts!

Bath’s Sarah Dennis competed in the Under 10’s. This is her first year of competing at this level, and she is managing her nerves very well and produced a very clean hoop routine. With three national squad girls in her section, the competition was all ways going to be tough, but Sarah performed near to her best and earned good scores.

In the under 12’s Bath had two gymnasts, Evie Longshaw and Marnie Calwell. Evie, performed as consistently as in training, and earnt herself fifth place overall, whilst Marnie, had mistakes on rope and ball, which cost her a chance at the titles. But her clubs routine was fantastic with very fast apparatus work and high jumps. She took the silver medal on all three apparatus and finished with the overall silver too.

Lynne Hutchison, competed in the Under 13’s. Unfortunately, small mistakes with rope and hoop cost her points. But with ribbon and ball, her routines were strong and solid, earning her bronze medals in three apparatus and the overall bronze ahead of the Finnish girl.

Meanwhile Francesca Fox in the juniors, stole the show, winning by clear margins, and was head and shoulders above the other juniors. Showing that her best is yet to come when she makes the move to senior competition next year, Francesca took a clean sweep of the gold medals and the overall gold.

Overall a really great competition with all the girls performing brilliantly, and the competition itself, as all ways fun, friendly and competitive! With ten medals from five gymnasts - a great competition for Bath!
